Maths in Art

Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. Mathematics provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity.

Benefits to Teachers

Maths in Art has been developed by teachers and artists for Year 7 students, but may be adapted for all Key Stage 3 students. The activities included can be taught as a complete scheme of work or can be dipped in and out of for creative ideas to use in the classroom.

Benefits to Students

This scheme has been trialled and tested by students from a number of schools, with a broad range of abilities. The scheme offers students the exploration of maths in a non-maths context, and provides the opportunity for the development of transferable skills such as problem solving, decision making, working as a team and communicating effectively.

Public Art and Problem Solving Pilot Case Study

Year 9 students from Crofton Academy, who were taking part in the school's STEM week, worked with artist Gillian Brent to explore Public Art and its association to science, technology, engineering and maths. As a result students will develop an understanding of Public Art and the commissioning process.
